Common Metre Tunes

   1 O Thou that dwellest in the heav'ns,
         I lift mine eyes to thee.
      Behold, as servant's eyes attend,
         Their master's hand to see.

   2  As handmaid's eyes her mistress' hand;
         So do our eyes attend
      Upon the Lord our God, until
         To us he mercy send.

   3 O Lord, be gracious unto us,
         Unto us gracious be;
      For filled with insolent contempt
         Exceedingly are we.

   4 Our soul is filled with scorn of those
         That at their ease abide,
      And with the insolent contempt
         Of those that swell in pride.

Long Metre Tunes (88 88 88)

   1 To thee, O Lord, I lift mine eyes,
      O thou enthroned above the skies!
         As servants watch their master's hand,
         Or maids by mistress watching stand,
      So to the Lord our eyes we raise,
      Until his mercy he displays.

   2  Have mercy, Lord, we cry to thee;
      Filled with contempt thy servants see!
         On us have mercy, scorned by those
         Who live in undisturbed repose!
      Beneath the scorning of the proud,
      And their contempt, our soul is bowed.
